Why is my poop green and runny and my stomach hurts?
Sometimes, green poop is an indication of a health issue.
Certain infections, like those caused by the bacterium Salmonella or the parasite Giardia, can also cause green stool.
But other symptoms — including severe diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever — are common with these illnesses.
What do green poops mean?
A common stool color change, green poop can mean that you’ve been eating green vegetables (which are rich in chlorophyll) or green, blue, or purple food coloring, or it can be caused by any condition that leads to diarrhea or loose stools.

When should you go to the ER for diarrhea?
You should seek medical attention as soon as possible for diarrhea with these symptoms:
- Diarrhea lasting more than two days.
- Blood or pus in the stool.
- Severe abdominal pain.
- Black, tarry stools (a sign of bleeding from the digestive tract)
- High fever.
- Signs of dehydration.

In some cases, yellow poop may signal the presence of excess fat in the stool, a condition that may be caused by anything that disrupts the intestinal lining (such as celiac disease) or disorders affecting the pancreas, liver, or gallbladder.
